Hack 4 Good Springfield brings together engineers, developers, UI/UX designers, entrepreneurs, and technologists for a 42-hour software competition. Small teams across college, and professional divisions work around the clock (or until you’re ready to call it a night!) to build innovative software solutions that solve real-world, civic problems. The teams’ final prototypes are then presented to a panel of highly-qualified industry experts and cash prizes are awarded to the top teams.
What is a hackathon?
A hackathon is an event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers and project managers, collaborate on software projects.
What is ‘hacking’?
Not used in reference to illegal computer or online activity, our definition of “hacking” refers to the act of building solutions with limited resources. In the case of a hackathon, these resources are usually time and energy.
Why should I participate in a hackathon?
There are several reasons to attend a hackathon:
- Networking: Hackathons attract individuals and organizations who are passionate about software and technology. Participants are able to actively network both within and outside their team, especially with the event sponsors, many of which are looking to recruit technical talent at the event. If you’re looking for a new job or career opportunity in tech, you’ll likely find one (or several) at a hackathon.
- Improve Your Skills: If you’re just learning how to code, hackathons are a great way to put your skills to the test in a contained environment by solving real-world problems over a set amount of time. Hackathons provide you with relevant experience and context to know how a team can work with an idea and develop a product as a result.
- Give back to Your Community: This is an opportunity to volunteer some time to a worthy cause.
- Perks + Prizes: Outside of an event t-shirt and other sponsor giveaways, many hackathons (like Hack 4 Good SGF) put up prizes for the top teams.
Do I have to stay overnight to participate?
No, although we have set up the facility to be accessible the entire time of the hackathon.
